box no. 10 | contents

Energy Efficient Box Transport

When we’re at the height of vegetable season and our boxes are brimming with corn, tomatoes, and melons, the boxes can get pretty heavy. And if you subscribe to the fruit share, then you’ve got double the load every two weeks. When I first lived in the city, I didn’t have a car and I relied on the standard folding, metal cart for grocery transportation. It occurred to me a few weeks ago that the vegetable box would probably fit in that old cart, so I dug it out from storage and resurrected it as the CSA Transport System (CSATS). I no longer need a second person to help haul the box home and I’m never tempted to drive.

If you’re within walking distance of your drop site, consider investing in a grocery cart. It not only saves fossil fuel energy if you normally drive to pick up your box, but it also saves physical energy if you’re used to walking it home the old-fashioned way. And, it keeps that waxy box coating off your favorite t-shirt!

Aww! Since we moved to SF, we bought ourselves the red version of your cart ... and love it!

I love this blog! We moved to this area in June and I contacted several CSA farms and no one replied. Guess it was just too late, I had hopes that someone quit/moved/went broke. Maybe next year. I also checked into the local culinary school here since I had the inclination to change careers too...$15000 for an 18 monthe program and that did not cover books, lab fees etc. I was shocked! The again, they have the corner on the market around here.

Thank you so much for the kind words. It is crazy how expensive culinary school would be - that’s why I would need to win the lottery!

You should check into an Angelic Organics CSA share for next year; they are already selling 2008 shares right now and they do sell out fast.

Very interesting blog! Thanks for sharing. I too enjoy fooling around in the kitchen... no not that kind :-) Although I'm not nearly as adventurous as you - your recipies sound quite gourmet! Nevertheless, I also enjoy many a good cookbook. I thought of one in particular as I read your blog, you may have it already but I'll throw it out there just in case it is called "Simply in Season" Recipes that celebrate fresh, local foods in the spirit of More with Less. This is the link to the publisher if you are interested :

Enjoyable. Once again, thanks for sharing

Hi

I stumbled across your site at lunchtime, then spent the whole of my lunch-hour reading as much of it as I could. It’s a really great site, and I would be most grateful if you allow me to add your link to my blog.

Please don’t be put off by the name of mine, it just stuck, but feel free to check to see if you are happy. I think your site would really complement the other links, but I always make sure I get permissions first (maybe I’m just old fashioned)

I look forward to hearing from you and keep up the veg boxes and posts, they are superb, all the best
